Ballarat could have its own waste to energy plant

Ballarat could have its own waste to energy plant

Ballarat Council is close to securing private investment for its waste-to-energy processing facility at the Ballarat West Employment Zone (BWEZ) site.

Plans for the facility have been in the works since 2012, which council hope will divert more than 60 percent of the city’s municipal waste into affordable, safe energy.

Council sought funding from both the State and Federal governments for the project but the lack of enthusiasm has forced them to seek private investment instead.

Several international companies have expressed interest in the project, which could cost anywhere from $20 million to over $100 million.

Set on the 44-hectare BWEZ site, the scale of recycling that the facility will be capable of has not been done in the region before and could have a significant regional impact.
